Canadian tennis players Leylah Fernandez, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Gabriel Diallo are through to the second round of Wimbledon 2025 after impressive opening-round victories on Monday.
Fernandez, seeded 29th, made quick work of Great Britain’s Hannah Klugman with a 6-1, 6-3 win.
The 22-year-old from Laval, Quebec, dominated the 16-year-old local wildcard, hitting 23 winners and converting five of six break point chances. Fernandez wrapped up the match in just over an hour.
She’s now eyeing her first appearance beyond the second round at the All England Club.
On the men’s side, Montreal’s Auger-Aliassime needed five sets to dispatch Australia’s James Duckworth.
After dropping the third set in a tiebreak, the 25th seed regrouped for a 6-2, 3-6, 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory.
He blasted 26 aces and 69 winners, although he also tallied 54 unforced errors in the three-hour, 42-minute contest.
Auger-Aliassime reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 2021.
Gabriel Diallo, also from Montreal, continued his breakout year with a straight-set win over Germany’s Daniel Altmaier.
Playing in his Wimbledon main-draw debut, Diallo controlled the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. The 23-year-old fired seven aces and won six of 12 break points.
He recently claimed his first ATP title at the Libema Open, entering Wimbledon ranked a career-best No. 40.
Looking ahead, Fernandez will face Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the second round on Wednesday. Auger-Aliassime meets Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany.
Diallo awaits the winner of fifth seed Taylor Fritz (USA) versus France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Meanwhile, Canadian newcomer Carson Branstine bowed out after a tough draw against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Branstine, 23, lost 6-1, 7-5 despite firing seven aces and matching Sabalenka’s winner count.
The Californian-born athlete, who represents Canada through family ties in Toronto, fought hard in the second set after earning her spot via the qualifying rounds.
“Her serve in the second set was unbelievable — 120mph,” Sabalenka said post-match. “She’s a strong opponent.”
Lastly, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario, is scheduled to play Argentina’s Mariano Navone in his first-round match on Tuesday.
Canada’s presence remains strong at Wimbledon 2025 — and the best may be yet to come.
